President Barack Obama has withdrawn his nomination of Sharon Block to replace Nancy Shiffer on the National Labor Relations Board (NLRB). 01 Aug 2014 Obama’s New Executive Order Requires Contractors to Disclose Labor Violations

  On Thursday, President Obama signed the “Fair Pay and Safe Workplaces Executive Order” which mandates that federal contractors disclose recent labor violations.  More specifically, any company that is attempting to obtain a federal contract for more than $500,000 must first disclose all of its labor law violations (state and federal) for the previous three years. “Labor violations” is a widely cast net which includes violations of rules regarding civil rights, wage and hour, collective…

06 May 2014 Jesuit University Lacks “Substantial Religious Character”

  An NLRB Regional Director has determined that Seattle University “lacks substantial religious character” and is therefore subject to the jurisdiction of the NLRB.   In response to a petition from non-tenure-track adjunct professors seeking to organize, the University asserted that it was not subject to the NLRB’s jurisdiction because it was a religiously operated university.  The regional director disagreed finding that the University “is not a church-operated institution.”   The Regional Director based his…
